When you think of a Florida island adventure, Peanut Island is probably one of the first places that comes to mind. With snorkeling, tropical water, walking trails, and a quick shuttle ride from the mainland, it’s an easy afternoon escape.
So… is it worth visiting?
I think so.
We started our adventure by getting lucky with free parking (always a great way to start the day) before hopping aboard the $25 round-trip shuttle to the island. The ride itself is very short and adds to the experience-it feels like you’re heading off on a little island getaway without having to travel very far.
Naturally, we packed our snorkeling gear because spotting sea turtles was at the top of our wish list.
Unfortunately, we visited on a Sunday.
The island was at full capacity, the Florida sun was doing what it does best, and the water visibility wasn’t ideal. I’m also pretty convinced the sea turtles are a lot like me- they tend to avoid crowds. While we didn’t get our turtle encounter, we still spotted plenty of colorful tropical fish while snorkeling.
Beyond the water, we enjoyed wandering the island, taking in the scenery, and simply slowing down for the afternoon. Sometimes that’s enough.
My Tips for Visiting Peanut Island
- Visit on a weekday if your schedule allows.
- Arrive early to beat both the heat and the crowds.
- Bring snorkeling gear, you may have better visibility than we did.
- Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks.
- Give yourself a few hours to explore without feeling rushed.
Final Thoughts
Not every adventure goes exactly as planned, and honestly, that’s okay.
Would I go back? Yes.
Next time I’d simply choose a quieter day, but even with the crowds, Peanut Island was still a fun way to spend an afternoon outdoors. Sometimes the best memories come from embracing the day you have instead of chasing the perfect one.
If you’re looking for an easy Florida adventure that’s close to home, Peanut Island is still worth adding to your list.
