During the summer, the Indian River Lagoon comes alive with bioluminescence, a natural phenomenon where tiny organisms create an electric blue glow when the water is disturbed. It’s one of the most unique experiences you can have on the Space Coast, and after finally checking it off my bucket list, I can confidently say it’s worth it.
Our Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour
We booked our tour with BK Adventures and launched near Merritt Island on a warm summer evening during a new moon, one of the best times to experience the brightest glow.
As soon as our paddles touched the water, streaks of glowing blue light appeared beneath us. Every movement created tiny bursts of glowing blue light.
To make the evening even more memorable, we spotted dolphins swimming nearby. Seeing them glide and sprint through the glowing water was easily one of the coolest wildlife experiences!
Tips Before You Go
Here are a few things I’d recommend bringing:
- Wear lightweight pants and a long-sleeve athletic shirt or rash guard to stay comfortable.
- Flip-flops make getting in and out of the kayak much easier.
- Bring bug spray. Mosquitoes weren’t bad during our tour, but conditions can vary each night.
- If possible, book your tour around a new moon. The darker skies make the bioluminescence much easier to see.
Is It Worth It?
Absolutely.
Whether you’re visiting Florida or you’re a local looking for something different to do this summer, a bioluminescence kayaking tour is one of the most magical experiences on the Space Coast.
If you’re creating your own Florida summer bucket list, don’t skip this one!
