Part 1: What is a Personal Brand?

Welcome to part 1 of the 3 part series on branding by yours truly, where we answer the question: What is a personal brand?

Guess what! You are already have one. Believe it or not, just by being YOU, you have a personal brand. Regardless of your presence on social media, you have a personal brand…well you ARE a personal brand; however we are going to discuss personal branding on social media for this series.

What makes up your personal brand online?

  • Your social media profiles
    • Your content
    • What you like, comment on, or view (all gets factored into the algorithm)
    • Friends you associate with on social media
    • People you follow
    • People who follow you
    • People who engage with your social media accounts
  • Your reputation online
    • How people perceive your wording, videos, photos, commentary
    • Developing and maintaining relationships
    • Marketing yourself

Why should you work on your personal brand?

  • To grow your business
    • If people feel connected to you, they will develop an interest in your business
  • To build relationships and to network
  • Attract more potential clients
  • Get hired! Would you believe that during job interviews, I am mainly asked about my personal brand and not previous job positions?

How can you market and grow your personal brand?

  • By being YOU
    • What makes you unique?
    • What are some traits you’d like to highlight and showcase?
    • What are some ways you can HELP others and provide value?
  • Staying authentic to your voice
    • I’ll let you in on a secret: Stay true to you, and do what feels natural for you. Do not copy or try to follow another person’s personal brand. People will catch on FAST and it will not feel right. Do not collaborate with brands that do not feel right. Trust your gut. I can sense when someone is not being authentic online, and I bet you can too!
  • Choose your target audience
    • Stick with your audience or niche to grow
    • Once you establish yourself, then you can branch out
  • Share testimonials and success stories
    • Create uniform content- stick with a color or theme. People will recognize you for this.

Let’s conclude with an exercise:

Take out a pen and paper and jot down the answers to these questions:

  1. What is a personal brand? What points stuck out to you in this post?
  2. Why do I want to develop and grow my personal brand?
  3. What social media platforms feel most natural for me to use? Why?
    1. To answer this question think about the following:
      1. Are you comfortable in front of the camera or do you prefer to write?
      2. Are you open to sharing about your personal life or would you like to keep it strictly professional?
      3. Do you enjoy video content?
      4. Can you consistently keep up on this platform?
  4. What color schemes, filters, or editing styles do I enjoy? What fonts do I like? What pictures do I enjoy seeing? What can I create consistently?

Let’s connect!
